During the month of May 2021, I'm intensively working to launch my home cupcake business, 'Phoebe's Cupcake Treasures'. My main focus will be on social media marketing and managing the business' finances. The entire project is a massive and exciting challenge, since I'll be learning a ton of entrepreneurial skills and monetizing my baking passion. This blog post is one aspect of my project. Overview
As a part of my marketing strategy, I’ve set up a business Instagram and Facebook account to promote my cupcakes. Even though in the past I’ve made social media content for another business, I still have heaps to learn about the world of social media marketing. For Phoebe’s Cupcake Treasures, my goal is to organically grow the business’ social following to create a positive reputation and enable customers to find my products.
This video walks you through how I’m creating and managing Instagram and Facebook content for my business. I explain the process I’ve taken to learn more about social media marketing, which boils down to these four steps:
1. Getting inspiration
Trying to come up with a fully-fledged social media plan out of thin air was way too overwhelming for me. So what I did was browse Instagram and Facebook accounts of dessert shops in a similar niche to mine. By analysing what other businesses were doing on social media, I gathered ideas I could implement for my marketing.
2. Creating a social media plan
I started off by creating visual branding guidelines, such as choosing a colour palette and font styles for my brand. Please head over to this blog post to learn about visual branding and see the one I created for my business..
I found this free Instagram guide from Preview to be incredibly helpful during the planning process. The pdf walks you through the steps of building an Instagram business account.
3. Creating social media content
When I had a clearer sense of direction, I began experimenting with creating content. Content creation boiled down to two parts; the visuals and the copy.
I used every opportunity I could to take images or videos, for example, whilst I was baking and finishing off an order. Since my goal with social media is to attract new customers and generate sales, I write copy that is mostly focused on features and benefits. In this blog post, I walk you through the copywriting tactics I’ve learned and how I’ve implemented them in my social media captions.
4. Organizing and managing content with Preview
I played around with two popular Instagram management tools, Later and Preview, to see which one works best for me. I chose to stick with Preview since its free plan has all the functions I need. I use it to plan out my feed and schedule posting times.
Even though the primary activity in my business is baking cupcakes, it’s important that I account for the time and energy spent on other tasks like managing the social accounts. I aim to implement systems and streamline tasks as much as I can to increase the profitability of my business. Preview is super useful as it makes me more efficient with social media.
